A doula is a woman who is
trained and experienced with childbirth that will help give emotional,
physical and informational support. A doula is there to help give
non-medical support to the pregnant woman and her family throughout
pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period. The word doula comes from
the greek word for female servant.
Dads and Doulas
"The doula does not displace the father but supports him, showshim how he can be helpful, and relieves much of his anxiety."
-Dr. John H. Kennell
Many dads worry that the doula will take their place, but no one can take his place. A doula is there to help support both the mom and dad throughout the entire process. As a doula I offer as much or as little support as the couple desires. This can be working together as a team to help mom, giving dad a break to get a snack, or sitting and reading a book in the corner ready to help when needed.
Testimonial
"Mikalia's
support was invaluable before during and after delivering our baby boy. From
providing research to better inform us about our specific concerns leading up
to labor, to providing unwavering support and encouragement during 13 hours of labor,
Mikalia was instrumental in realizing the natural birth we had hoped for."
-Sarah and Michael
As a husband I would
highly recommend Mikalia as a doula. She was my beacon
of light through the process. She was the one that I turned
to for support and advice while my wife was in labor. If
she would not have been there the experience would not have been as
peaceful, calm, and natural as it was. I owe a debt of
gratitude to her for the calmness, persistency, support, and knowledge
that she brought to our home while my wife was in labor! I
cannot say thank you enough.
-Chad D.
"Mikalia
brought a thoughtful, calm presence to
the labor and delivery. Having an advocate that was as informed as
Mikalia was
a weight off my mind and that of my other assistants. I will always be
grateful
for having a memory of my labor as being a joyful experience, with the
camaraderie of women all there to protect and empower me."
-Sarah A.
How can a doula help me?
Several research studies have shown that having a doula reduces:
C-Sections
Length of labor
Forceps use
Requests for Epidurals
Use of any pain medication
Depression
Anxiety
One study asked couples about their experience with their doula and
100% of couples rated the experience positively.
